For one of my player's backgrounds after coming out of the tomb of level up one of my players was a mercenary in the time between level 0 and level 1, this is how his character got his training as a warrior. I wanted to generate the name and banner and other details of the company and have something I could use in the future for similar cases.
I was influenced by Metal Gods of Ur-Hadad's gang generation tables, the idea being that you roll all the dice and move through the tables. So I went ahead and made one for mercenary companies. This worked well for my setting because Mercenaries are alive and well in the setting, used in proxy battles and skirmishes to make sure the city-states have plausible deniability.
